26th January 2024: The National Livestock Research Centre (NLRC), Bumthang under the Department of Livestock and Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Samtse is conducting five days of training on the management of honeybees in modern moveable frame hives for comb and blossom honey production in Jangchhogling village from 25th – 29th January 2024. The training is organized with the main objective of establishing a model “Comb Honey and Blossom Honey Village in Jangchholing under Samtse Dzongkhag.”

The training was preceded by two days of stakeholders’ consultative meetings and social group formation on comb honey and blossom honey production. The training is being attended by 23 beekeepers from Jangchholing, Nimaling, and Chirlogsa villages in Samtse Gewog. The NLRC will procure and supply about 230 modern moveable frame hives and Apis cerana honeybee colonies to the group members after the training. The program is expected to produce an average of 2760 kgs of honey (both comb and blossom honey) annually earning a gross income of about Nu. 2.208 million/annum.

The center will focus on the capacity development of group members on queen grafting, multiplication of honeybee colonies, framing their own hives and accessories, product processing, packaging, labeling, branding, and promotion of marketing in the subsequent years.

The program is implemented gearing towards the Department’s goal to enhance the production of high-value livestock products during the 13th FYP and long-term perspective plan and is supported through DoL’s EU-PISRAFS project and fund allocated to NLRC during the FY 2023-24.
