About Project
The project “Productive and Sustainable Food Systems in Bhutan for Environmental Benefits and Gross National Happiness” (FSP) is funded by the Global Environment Facility and supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. FAO is the GEF Implementing Agency for the project, providing project cycle management and support services as established by the GEF policy. MoAL will act as the lead executing agency and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project results.
Bhutan FSIP project addresses key priorities of the Royal Government of Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan, which aims to enhance Bhutan’s productivity and diversify its environmentally sustainable agriproducts and markets. These priorities align with the FSIP pathway, especially regarding 1) supportive enabling conditions for sustainable and healthy food systems; 2) transformation of food systems at farm, landscape, and value chain levels; 3) adaptive management and knowledge. Beyond enhancing production efficiency, GEF support will strengthen the long-term environmental sustainability and resilience of food systems in eastern Bhutan, helping to reduce the agricultural sector’s overall ecological footprint.
