22 February,2025, Trashiyangtse: In commemoration of His Majesty The King’s 45th Birth Anniversary, Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, distributed ten modified tents to yak-herding households in Rolmateng-Singye Dzong, Khoma Gewog under Lhuentse Dzongkhag on February 21 and Shingphel village, Bumdeling Gewog under Trashiyangtse Dzongkhag on February 22. Additionally, on February 18, 2025, fifty-three sets of these modified tents were handed over to herding communities in Dagala and Naro Gewog under Thimphu Dzongkhag.

This initiative aims to enhance the livelihoods of highland communities, particularly during the seasonal migration of their herds. The high-quality tents, designed to withstand harsh cold weather and heavy monsoon rains, will provide better shelter and living conditions for the herders.

The tents are provided through a cost-sharing model of 80:20 under the “Improving the Quality of Yak Hair for Enhanced Income Generation of Highland Communities” project, funded by the Bhutan Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

This support reflects the Royal Government’s continuous efforts to uplift the highland communities and promote sustainable yak farming practices. The yak herding communities in Bhutan play a very critical role in preserving unique age-old tradition and culture which continues to incite interests and curiosities across the globe. The provision of modified tents testifies the Ministry’s commitment to continued support in sustaining and enhancing lives of herders. The Ministry in the 13th FYP plans to further support the highlander through value addition, product development and exploring the possibilities of Geographical Indication (GI) certification for brand exclusivity and marketing.
